The idea that certain foods have an era associated with them, like a fashion trend, is a funny thing to think about. But it’s so true! In my mind the years around 2007 beets & goat cheese were on every single restaurant menu. And late 90’s -2000’s Sesame Crusted Tuna was super “in”. I imagine it on menus along with some “crispy wonton chip” situation, remember those? I vividly recall my dad having his girlfriend over and we made that, it was very cool. The difference between a Juicy sweatsuit and this tuna, is that I still make it all the time. It’s special, it’s stupid easy, looks impressive and the ultimate check mark: it can be dipped in soy sauce.
The slaw that I made with it, is an iteration of my “big bowl of crunchy slaw” that I make all the time. Just tweaking the ingredients according to what I have or the flavor profile I’m going for. A lot of shredded crunchy veg with a light dressing that’s salty and packed with flavor. This one has a lime, soy vibe happening. The farmer’s market are really starting to burst with vegetables other than potatoes. Hallelujah! So use cabbage as your base, but beyond that, use what you have or whatever beautiful things you can find.
This particular time I’m serving the tuna & slaw with some cucumbers tossed with rice vinegar, salt and chili flake along with sliced avocado and wasabi mayo. A pot of rice is also a great addition. The recipe for Sesame Crusted Tuna & Crunchy Slaw will slide into subscriber’s inboxes later this morning.
MiniMouths:
oooo this little boy has had quite the week in food! He very much liked chunks of tuna and avocado sprinkled with a tiny bit of soy. But he LOVED pierogies, which he tired for the first time. Can you blame him? I’ve also been taking advantage of the last altufo/champagne mangoes. Those cubed up right on the high chair tray + Sesame Street is what has been giving me exactly 7 minutes to take a quick shower in the morning.
What I’m Loving This Week:
Russel Brand’s From Addiction to Recovery: This is a documentary he made back in 2012, and it’s available on Prime. TBH, not the best film you’ll see, and the first two thirds are not riveting. BUT what really got me was towards the end (it’s only 58 min) he goes to parliament to speak about policy change and mental health. WOW. It got me fired up. His use of the words Love and Compassion in a bureaucratic/political setting like that is something I’ve been laughed at by people during a discussion for saying. The idea that in a judicial or political system we could have Love and Compassion for individuals, I think is pretty radical for most people. Even if addiction isn't top of mind for you (although I’d say 99% of us are touched by it somehow), I’d say give it a watch to take in the last bit of the film. His clothing and appearance while he’s at parliament is also an interesting exercise in how we judge people based on their external appearance.
Nuts.com : Last week I had to order a ton of different nuts for a job, so I thought I’d give this site a try. I’d seen the packaging around at studios and people’s homes. It’s great!! The selection was extensive, the prices great and it came to my house in ONE day. They also had a huge selection of powders like adaptogenic mushroom powders. I plan on thoroughly exploring soon.
Bentgo Kid’s Bento Box: Can’t say I thought I’d ever be waxing poetically about kid’s lunch boxes, but here we are. I really like that glass snapware for his food, because I’m not thrilled about his food sitting in plastic. But Dean can't have glass at school. So, I bought this lunch box for him after an extensive google search. It’s GOOD. It is leak proof, which is numero uno for me. It is slim and has compartments. A very cool feature is the ice pack layer that you can freeze to keep the whole thing cold. Also, the fact that he’s old enough for a multi compartment bento box just makes me want to cry.
Wishing everyone some freshness in the kitchen to match this amazing weather. XO Liv
